Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that can promote healing, balance and well-being. Similar to touch therapy, Reiki is administered by using the hands to intentionally focus energy and stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities.
It is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy(1).
What can I expect during the Reiki session?
During the session, you will lie, fully clothed on your back on a comfortable massage therapy table. You will hear relaxing music and you may smell sage incense in the air. The room will be lit by soft lighting and the session will last approximately 45 minutes. A blanket is typically placed over you to ensure you are warm and comfortable.
I will place my hands on or above areas of the body, focusing often on the seven major chakras (learn more below). I will walk around the table at times, depending on which areas I am placing my hands on. My hands will be placed at the head, above the heart center, the stomach, the arms, the knees and the feet.
Do I need to do anything special during the session?
You do not need to do anything other than to give yourself the permission to take this time for yourself. I generally will not talk during the session, except for the beginning while we get started. You, however, can speak at any time should you have a question or need something. It is important that you are fully comfortable so please indicate if there is anything that could make your experience the best it can be (more/less lighting, temperature adjustments, going to the washroom, etc.). It is perfectly natural to shift around if you need to. Most clients find it most relaxing to close the eyes. The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable and relaxed.
Some clients like to take the time to quiet the mind or practice deeper breathing. This is your choice entirely and although it can be beneficial in itself, it is not needed to realize the benefits of Reiki. Do not worry about falling asleep, I will wake you when we are done if so.
Thoughts may come and go throughout the session (you may even find yourself thinking about the shopping list! :-)). I find it helpful to just let them flow through you rather than trying to stop them. Either way, there is no right or wrong way.
At the end of the session I will let you know we are done, offer you a glass of water and be available should you have any questions. I recommend that clients drink lots of water in the days following a session to help keep the body clear of toxins.
What is a chakra?
A chakra is thought to be an energy point or node in the subtle body. Chakras are believed to be part of the subtle body, not the physical body, and as such, are the meeting points of the subtle (non-physical) energy channels. They are believed to be channels in the subtle body through which life force, or vital energy, moves2. Although it is believed that there is a significant number of chakras in the body, seven major chakras are considered to be the most important.
“Poor health is not caused by something you don’t have; it’s caused by disturbing something that you already have. Healthy is not something that you need to get, it’s something you have already if you don’t disturb it.”
